Review: China Airlines complaint
Flight number: [redacted]from Taipei to Yangon
September **, 2013
Description of event: We were abused and bribed by China Airlines staff on a flight from Taiwan to Yangon.
Weeks prior to boarding the flight we visited the China Airlines office on Nanjing East road to ask about baggage allowances for the flight.
The staff there told us we were allowed 2 bags of 20kg each for each traveller on the flight.
We returned to the China Airlines office a few days later to again confirm this allowance and sign up as a frequent flyer member. At this time, we again checked the baggage allowance for the flight and were told 2 bags of 20kg each for each passenger.
When we arrived at the Taiwan airport, one of the check-in counter supervisors refused to allow the baggage on the plane, telling us for the first time that we were only allowed 1 bag of 20kgs each.
We explained the mix-up and the supervisor refused to allow the bags on the plane.
We asked to speak to his supervisor and he refused to call his supervisor.
He humiliated us by laughing at us while we begged him to call his supervisor. My travelling companion was in tears and he still refused to let our luggage on the plane. He had held us up for so long, that our blame was due to begin boarding and we were in danger of missing our flight.
Another China Airlines staff member finally came over and told us we would have to pay NT$6,698 for the bags. I asked for her name so that we could file a report. She said if we wanted her name or the name of her staff to lodge a report that she would charge us extra money, which is bribery.
We nearly missed our flight entirely and were unable to claim tax, change our Taiwan dollars or use the duty free services of the airport.
Also, despite marking our luggage as “Fragile”, delicate items were broken by China Airlines staff during the transit.
Summary of damages:
1. Charges for “excess weight”: TWD6698
2. TWD that could not be changed at airport into USD: NT$29,000
3. Tax refund that could not be collected: US$60Desired Settlement: A refund and an apology.
