Since moving into our rental property at *** Street in June all of our utilities have had catastrophic failures. The landlord, *** and the manager, *** have made repairs using unlicensed repairmen and without pulling the proper permits.
In July, our water line was corroded between the meter and house. Mr. sent out a one-man crew to trench the yard and reconnect the water. We were displaced from our home for two days without compensation.
Three weeks later our electricity began to fluctuate, resulting the light fixtures blowing out, lack of AC, loss of refrigerated food. Again, they sent out an unlicensed worker who cut into the meter and then rewired the circuit breaker without ever pulling a permit.
Most recently, we smelled gas. We filed a maintenance request and like always, Mr. sent out an unlicensed repairman who assured us the house was safe. Over the course of the next week I felt lethargic and ill. My coworkers noted how I came in each morning looking quite pale and out of it. We left the house for a weekend camping and when we returned the gas smell was stronger than before. This time we called the gas company. The inspector they sent out told us the furnace was not to code and that the gas line in the house was not holding pressure. They turned off the gas until the repairs could be made. That was last week.
We told the manager, *** that the house was not suitable to inhabit without hot water and heat. She disagrees despite what Fair Housing says. We are still without gas.
Product_Or_Service: Rental property
Other (requires explanation) Our lease requires two months' rent if it is terminated early. It also specifies that the deposit will be kept. Since this house was never actually safe to rent, we would like the deposit returned, the lease to be terminated with no further monies owed. We would like our credit to not be affected. While we think it would be reasonable to ask for the prorated days we were without a house to be returned to us, we would much rather just get this over with and move on.
Document Attached***
Progress has been made in the last 24 hours. Gas service was restored to the residence. The landlord, *** has agreed to release us from the lease without penalty. He will hold our $795 deposit for a maximum of 30 days after we move out on November 5 and return whatever is not used to cover damages, if any. I am attaching the email exchanges regarding this agreement.
I would prefer to keep this complaint open pending the final resolution on December 5.
