Dec. 2, 2016, I met with ***, Music Manager, at the Can PR where he informed me of a new "Artist Development" program. He described it as a "game changer" multiple times. This program involved CPR producing a radio ready Single and the supporting PR materials to market the Single. He also claimed they represented well-known artists such as *** and ***. In a previous phone call I was originally told that the program would cost me $3000. However, during this meeting I was told that due to the fact that my genre is country and it would cost more to produce: $5000 + HST. Mr. explained that he wanted to leverage this opportunity to pitch and get me signed with his label contacts in Nashville.
Jan. 13th, 2017 I was sent the contract to sign and was informed that I only had 7 days to accept the offer: " You have until Friday January 20 at 5:00pm until this deal expires." this contract stated that I was to pay $2000 within 3 days of signing the contract and was to finance the remaining $3650 over 3 equal monthly payments of $1,216.67 to the company until the completion of the four month term. Also, that Can PR would retain 20% of all moneys including direct moneys, sales, earnings, royalties, bonuses, shares of profit and all other incomes received for the product that will be developed during the term of the agreement whether directly or indirectly. Attached was a schedule A of services agreed to be rendered by Can PR, which included the following:
Content Creation
- One hour in studio session to audit music catalogue &
select your next single
- Music production and recording with award winning
production team
- Vocal recording in studio
- Artist biography
- Photo Look book
- Press Release drafted by music publicist
- Brand design aligned with your social media channels
It has been almost a year now and I have no single and have not received a single PR service. Of all the services laid our in the contract they have failed to provide any of them except for the studio time. For example, it said I would have an hour in studio to review my song catalogue of work and agree on the next single with them, this never happened. I was promised an award winning producer but had to fire two producers that the company hired without my consent for my project because of the poor quality of their work. I then requested a meeting with the owners to try and resolve the issue amicably. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed when I arrived and was questioned in an unfair manner in regards to the incident and was asked questions such as how I paid for music and what I did for a living. They asked me about my future projects and who else I was working with. They offered no resolution at that time. After several days with no resolve in sight, I requested that we part ways and they provide me with a refund for services unrendered. They refused.
I have since been in contact with individuals who have worked closely with CPR who have revealed to me that they do not represent ***. I feel very deceived by this misrepresentation. I felt that their services would have been of better quality and their conduct more professional due to the fact that they had such established entertainers under their belt. This is one of the reasons I agreed to work with them in the first place. Now, I am in a position to spend money unexpectedly to create a single, which was originally to be produced as part of our contract. Can PR response has been, "AAs mention to you, a refund is not an option. Per your signed agreement,
this program is not itemized per service: i.e studio sessions per hr."
I am requesting a full refund of the $5,650 I paid.
