I agreed only to an initial consultation with *** and paid the required $150. Subsequently I was billed $540 for the X-rays they took.
*** does not accept insurance and charges $180 for the initial visit. I schedule the initial consultation and paid the fee. They explained the costs, which would be between $2000 and $3000 if I decided to continue treatment. I did schedule a second visit two weeks out, but called the office the following day to cancel, because of the expense. I visited two other dental offices that deal with TMJD; neither charged for the consultation, one even did a complete set of X rays.
A couple months later I received a bill for $540 for the X-rays which were taken at the initial consultation. I had never been told that the X-rays would be a charge beyond the $180 fee. Numerous calls and letters to the office fell on unsympathetic ears. Other dentists have told me that their bills for X-rays never exceed $50. I feel this charge is unfair, was unexplained and is exorbitant and now *** threatens to damage my credit history. I am now receiving calls and letters from Choice Recovery collection agency.
I would like the dental practice to delete the $540 bill and also contact the collection agency to let them know this bill has been resolved.

I am writing in response to ***'s complaint. On his initial visit he had an exam and x-rays done. As a courtesy to the patient we allow them to pay for the x-rays when the appliance is seated. The patient scheduled an appointment to return to the office but canceled the appointment. On his initial visit he was given a copy of all of the charges which he signed knowing the charge for the x-rays. I can provide the signed copy if necessary. Patient even called back to reschedule the appointment at which time he stated he would pay his overdue balance for the x-rays. Please let me know if you need a copy of the signed agreement. thank you
(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
I was never advised that the X ray cost was deferred until later. I think this is unjust. Furthermore I am appalled at the charge of $540. I got a consultation with another dentist = no charge - where the dentist/TMJ expert told me they did not charge for the X rays since they are so cheap no. Also this dentist advised me that I did NOT have TMJD and gave me - no charge - some exercises to help with the problem.
