Following the installation of a brick sidewalk, the bricks have shattered. Bricks need to be replaced and the walkway areas sealed from moisture.
We contracted with ***, Bartz Landscaping LLC, MHIC ***, to do three projects. Two involved drainage and one was for a reclaimed brick walkway from the street sidewalk to the house. We are specifically seeking correct completion of the walkway. The walkway was set in the end of October 2019 so we could safely walk up to our house. Several weeks later, in November I began contacting *** about the bricks that had begun to crumble along the walkway. I sent him pictures which now included multiple bricks shattering. On November 21, he responded "Let's check it out and schedule a day to seal it". He and the crew replaced the crumbled brick but stated that they did not have enough to finish them all. He talked about researching the product to seal the surface and keep them from retaining moisture and then exploding when they froze. He said he would return that evening to seal the walkway. He has never returned.
In February 2020, I was out of town and noticed a local Maryland company advertising a free load of reclaimed bricks. I connected him with that owner and urged him to reach out to him immediately because free items like this would go quickly. On the next day I reached out again to see about the bricks and he responded that he was picking the load up that day/morning. I reached out to inquire the timeline for completion of our project by email (2/2, 3/30, 4/27) and text (4/23, 4/27, 4/29). The only response was a text on 4/29 saying "I will call you today" but as of this writing we have received no communication.
Our expectation is that our 6 month old walkway project be completed asap with all shattered bricks replaced correctly and the walkway areas be sealed completely. I am attaching pictures and can send documentation of the communication attempts we have made. The walkway is dangerous to walk on now and we were unable to use it during the winter months due to constant icing conditions since the bricks were not sealed. We need it fixed.
We are expecting that the shattered bricks as well as any that are cracked or broken, be replaced in the walkway areas. The area around the bricks needs to be filled in with sand. The entire walkway needs to be sealed for moisture to insure that they will not retain moisture and keep a coating of ice on them all winter. If exact matching bricks are not available, we will discuss with Mr. the replacement of the entire walkway with a comparable product at his expense.
