BILLING / Wake Forest Location
Their billing department is horrible -terrible people. I scheduled an appointment as a new member to Avance Care - a new patient for physical. When I arrived, I mentioned the concerns I've had. When the bill came, it was noted for problems (they didn't actually treat anything) rather than a physical. Contacted the insurance company, who relayed to reach back out to Avance Care and request to have them change the insurance submission code for physical. After several promises and engaging their billing people, which appear to be overseas, no one did anything. I'm tired of contacting them, and it's been weeks now, but they keep sending their bill. Worst experience ever.

Unethical Billing
I've been going to Avance Care for a few years. I always pay at the time of my visit if the receptionist indicates that payment is needed. I went for an appointment back in Aug. and I paid my co-pay at that time. A few weeks later, I get a statement saying I owe $40 for the visit! I called them and told them I paid that the day of the visit. The lady told me, "Oh, they applied the $40 to your previous visit, so your most recent visit is still due AND, we are charging you an extra $20 for being late! Why didn't they communicate any of this when I was there? I don't even remember owing them $40 for a previous visit! I am so confused. I will be changing doctor offices as I am not happy with their way of "billing" me. I've never had this issue with any doctors office. A little communication goes a LONG way!

Issue with communication of additional charges for self pay clients.
I received care at Avance Care in *** NC 07/26/2019. I choose Avance Care because I don't have insurance and after chatting with the person online the cost was explained very well I thought. I scheduled a appointment to be seen within a few days. When I arrived, I filled out the required documentation on the computer and paid the $150 fee for self-pay visit. I was seen by the doctor and given a shot for my pain before leaving. When leaving I stopped at the desk to make sure that I had nothing else to do or pay for. After speaking with another nurse the check in/out nurse said I was good to go. Fast forward Feb 2020 when I get notification that I have a collections account from with *** from Avance visit on 07/26/2019. I was shocked because I paid in full when I was seen at the appointment. After doing research I found I was billed $25.00 for the pain injection and $36.00 for the pain medicine that was in the needle. As a self-pay patient, I was told by the chat person and information on the Avance website that self pay means pay in full at the time of visit. There is no reason these charges were not known at the end of my appointment. The shot was given to me and I had to wait 10-15 mins to just make sure that I would have any bad side effects to the shot. I stopped a the check out desk before leaving.

I paid the $61 immediately to Avance but that doesn't change this has affected my credit significantly. I suggest that in the future, you explicitly tell the self-patient in person at check out that there maybe additional charges billed to them even after they pay what is owed at the time of service. I am sure the information is probably located in the disclosures that your company requires to be signed however when a person is sick or in pain, they might not read those disclosures carefully. Especially when on the Avance website it states that "A Self-Pay Patient is either uninsured or has an insurance plan that is not in-network. Self-Pay Patients pay in full at the time of visit for our services and we are not required to file a claim or submit any documentation to a third party." Also chat advises the same information so a client would have no reason to believe they would get a bill.

Desired Outcome

My account removed from collection status. Also like my account to be shown paid in full since I paid the $61 already. The collection company is saying I still owe late and collection fees. Consider making adjusting so self pay clients know that they may receive a bill for other charges. Information in the signed online disclosure is not enough. I asked question at checkout and was still not advised. With so much junk mail people don't open mail.

Hello, we are sorry for the issue with billing. We have adjusted off the statement and collection fees and removed the account from the outside collection agency. We will try to do a better job of collecting in full at the time of service moving forward. Thank you for your feedback and for choosing Avance Care. Please let me know if there are any additional issues and I'll be happy to address. Thanks again

Avance Care told me I can do nutrition consultation without any out of pocket expense as their expert checked my insurance plan. I checked with them again to make sure there is no copay or anything I need to pay before I did the services, They always assured me no charge for me. But after two appointment, I got bills for these visits. I called the billing department and the agent said they will work with my insurance company to get it resolved. Next things I know, I get the debt collector phone calls as Avance care sent the bills to debt collection to ruin my credit. Please stop their bad practice of defrauding patients.

Desired Outcome

Billing Adjustment Stop debt collection and apologize for the mistake.

We have written off all charges related to this unfortunate incident with *** of Texas and removed the account from our collection agency. We would like to clarify, for the patient and the Revdex.com, that the responsibility for this matter lies solely with *** of Texas. Both the patient and Avance Care that have been defrauded by *** of Texas. While Avance Care has done nothing wrong, we will bear the cost of this fraud by writing off the balances for services rendered as a professional courtesy to our patient.

We verify benefits as a courtesy to patients, but patients are ultimately responsible for knowing the terms of their insurance according to their or their employer's contract with their payer. In this case *** of Texas misquoted the patient's benefits to Avance Care, and then refused to honor the benefits information they provided when claims were processed. This correctly resulted in the patient liability, and the patient did not respond to multiple statements for services rendered until the account was turned over to collections.

We expect our actions will resolve this matter. Please let us know if any additional information or action is needed.

I was disputing a charge. Attempted to get in contact and kept getting error. Never was contacted re collections. They sent me to collections.
I visited in December. In February, I received detail of the bill and disputed the coding of the service. No one could tell me why they coded my visit the way they did. I was trying to remain in contact but every extension they gave me to call back was malfunctioning. During the dispute process, they sent me to collections, which I now owe $90 to collections on top of my credit being damaged. They should not have collected without prior notification, which I did not receive nor should they have collected prior to resolving a dispute.

Desired Outcome

Remove the collection fee and the negative remark on my credit report

We are sorry that you feel this way about Avance Care. Unfortunately our documentation of events differs from your recollection.

Regarding the coding. Your visit qualifies as a 99204 based on the Evaluation and Management Coding Guidelines from the American Medical Association. The services are more expensive than average due to the complexity of medical decision making, as well as the fact that you were a new patient, which costs approximately 30% more than return patients.

You also have a high deductible insurance plan, and we asked for a deposit initially or a credit card on file to help you plan and pay for the higher cost associated with high deductible insurance plans. No deposit was made, nor was a credit card put on file by you, contributing to the higher cost on invoice.

We mailed invoices for your insurance assigned deductible amount to your address on *** on January 10th, February 15th, March 22nd. With each invoice, an email was also sent to ***.com. The account was turned over to collections on April 30th for non-payment and our inability to reach you by phone.

We received your billing inquiry call initially on April 6th, and asked a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) to reach out to you, but were unable to get in touch with you. Our coder closed the inquiry on May 2nd after leaving multiple messages.

Unfortunately, we will be unable to adjust your balance as these are valid charges, and our billing department executed our financial policy properly. You should have a copy of our financial policy, signed by you, in your email from us on the date of service.

Customer Response • Jul 10, 2018

There is still false information in the company's response. I never received phone calls regarding my balance. I attempted to reach out to the billing department to follow up on my inquiry as to the way my visit was billed. I still do not have a valid explanation of the coding. I also did in fact place a card on file, or at least I gave a card to the receptionist upon check in. There was also no mention of a computerized pychiatric test being billed to my account. The invoice is impossible to read and I understand a great deal about medical invoicing. You still sent my account to collections prior to closing the dispute case. The number I was provided by your staff member to respond to the dispute was invalid. I attempted several times to call. I have exactly ZERO voicemails from you. This is fraudulent. I want a detailed explanation of the coding. I want to understand why it was $100 more difficult to diagnose my already self diagnosed anemia and to prescribe me anxiety medication than it was to do the same for my husband who is a white male. I will be forwarding my complaints against this company to whomever I need to get this resolved. I am still deeply dissatisfied.

Avance Primary Family Care Response • Jul 12, 2018

Unfortunately, we reached out again on July 11th, 2018 in order to try and help you understand the coding and invoicing and once again received your voicemail, and once again never received a return call. We would be willing to remove the collection and statement fees in the amount of $113.79, and remove the account from collections, in return for you paying the remaining balance in full at 142.63. Please call us to make payment if you find this arrangement acceptable.

We continue to disagree with you assessment of the service you received, preferring our documented responses to your accusations. Your lack of response to our invoices and outreach until after your account was turned over to collections is unfortunate. Please feel free to escalate this matter however you see fit. We are prepared to defend ourselves and will engage our legal team to address your defamation on our social media accounts.

in june 2017 I had an appointment at Avance Care in North Raleigh, NC I had hoped to find a primary care physician...Avance Care gave me a 15 minute appointment with a physicians assistant
*** I met with *** for roughly 15 minutes and in that amount of time she supposedly attended my health care needs which are quite involved and performed a depression assessment...all of which Avance Care billed nearly 350.00 FOR 15 minutes with a PHYSICIAN'S ASSISTANT...she did absolutely NOTHING for or to me...no injections no prescription refills NOTHING I called Avance Care's office manager and he just informed me that complaints like these really "tick him off" and he would check into it and get back to me....He never did get back to me...I have reported this matter to the medicare people as I think they already paid these crooks too much, and I flat out refuse to pay even one red cent....these people have turned me into another sleazy company of *** for collections THIS IS WRONG!!!~ These people are taking advantage of sick people in the Raleigh community and should be run out of business altogether....

Desired Outcome

No further contact by the business. I wish to no longer hear from Avance Care or *** on Avance Care's behalf...I WANT AVANCE CARE TO REFUND ALL MONIES RECEIVED FROM MEDICARE and them and their attack dogs to just go away and NEVER even try to contact me again....

Avance Primary Family Care Response • Jan 22, 2018

Good Morning,

We at Avance Care always strive to provide to best care possible to all of our patients. As I reviewed the services that the patients received on the date in question it appears that he was charged appropriately. A member of our billing department and I tried to reach out to the patient a couple of different times to help resolve the issue. Each time we reached out to him we were unsuccessful and never received a callback. We have removed him from collections and he will know longer be hearing from***. In addition, we have adjusted his balance and cleared his account. We hope the patient finds our attempt to resolve this matter satisfactory.

Customer Response • Jan 22, 2018

I still believe that Avance Primary WAY over charged for a 15 minute appointment with a physician's assistant, the fact that my name has been removed from collections and my account cleared is likely the very best resolution I could have hoped for....and this matter is as resolved as it can get. Thank You

I visited Avance Care for medical services on April 20th, 2017. I paid for all services and a discount card (issued for filing a credit card on record with them) in full at the time services were rendered. I was informed there would be no more charges if I paid in full at the time of service. They have sent me numerous bills since my visit claiming that I owe more money. I have repeatedly disputed these charges, but they continue to send me notices stating that I owe more money for services, despite the fact that no more services were rendered after I left Avance Care on April 20th, 2017.

They also erroneously billed me for lab results. After I contacted them to dispute the charges and point out their mistake, they finally yielded and attested that the lab bills were not my responsibility and that I did not need to pay them.

Desired Outcome

Billing Adjustment Stop sending me bills and accept that I paid everything that was/is owed. Correct my credit score if it has been affected by your error. Stop lying to your patients about hidden fees.

Avance Primary Family Care Response

We are sorry we did not accurately calculate charges for this patient at the time of service. For the patient's future reference, and in accordance with our Disclosure and Consent documentation which she signed, the total charges are determined when billing processes the services, and an additional balance may result when services are rendered that are not collected at the time of service, as happened in this case. As a show of good faith and to resolve this complaint without further inconvenience to our business, we adjusted the balance off this account and removed the account from our collection agency. The patient's credit scored was not affected as the bill never officially went to collections. We consider the matter to be resolved.

Customer Response

I am satisfied with the response and actions it entails. May I suggest that in the future, you explicitly tell the patient in person that there may be additional charges even after they pay what is owed at the time healthcare services are rendered by an Avance Care health practitioner.
