Review: We contacted Mr. [redacted](referred to us by our insurance company) to fix a leak from the chimney last year in May. He gave us an estimate for $871.08 to fix it. Following is the description of the work in the estimate: R&R chimney flashing removal $18.20, replace $321.42. Remove and replace L flashing - $51.38. Labor to set up for repair - $245. Interior drywall repair $235.08
After we agreed for this estimate, all he did was bring two workers and either apply a caulking or sealant and they were here for only less than 20minutes. They didn't do any work mentioned in the contract. A few days later [redacted] came and fixed the drywall. We paid him full amount mentioned in the contract knowing that he didn't do more than half of the work described in the contract. We were hoping that he fixed the problem. But... A year later it started leaking again in March. I called him and he said he will fix it for free. I called him every week since March and he kept on saying that he would come the week after that. This continued till the beginning of May and I stopped calling him. I found another person to fix this and he fixed the chimney for $100( [redacted] took $635 for the same work). Now we have to fix the interior drywall again. [redacted] charged us for work that's not performed as well as poor quality of work. I can provide a copy of the estimate if needed.Desired Settlement: We would like to get a refund for the amount we paid to [redacted], which is $876.67.

Response:
Regarding
the complaint filed by [redacted], we assert the following allegations:
The original appointment that was “only
20 minutes” was an inspection of the roof with Standarski Roofing, the
subcontractor that we use for all our roof repairs. His inspection determined that the
flashing did not need to be replaced but needed to be tarred and
sealed. Standarski Roofing
employees returned on another day to complete the repairs. No leaking
occurred for a period of one year which indicates that another issue must
have occurred to cause the new leaking. We would suspect that the new
leaking occurred from ice damming caused by the excessive snow loads of
this past winter. Their roof has a configuration of two roof slopes
flowing into a single valley right by the chimney. The excessive snow,
when it is allowed to accumulate, causes the water to penetrate under the
shingles beyond the flashing of the valley. This was a common occurrence
this past winter for many homes. As for the charge for replacement of the
roof flashing, it is our error that a billing invoice was not issued that
would have changed the original estimate to reflect the proper wording of
the work completed. It should be known that we were asked, and completed
additional caulking of an area around windows on the lower level. Between
the work that was completed on the roof, the drywall and painting and this
additional caulking, we felt that the amount charged in the original
estimate would be equivalent to the work actually completed. As for the additional $100.00 spent to
repair the roof, it is not clear in the complaint what the nature of work
was completed for this charge. All the interior drywall and painting
was completed after the roof repairs were completed. When the invoice was presented and paid,
no contest of the charges were made. When originally contacted about the leak,
Mr. [redacted] was informed that in severe cases of ice damming, the roof may
leak again in the future. It would be suggested that heat cables be
installed in the valley to prevent the snow buildup.
As
a courtesy, I would be willing to return to the property and complete the
additional drywall and painting repairs at no charge to Mrs. [redacted], as a means
of trying to settle this complaint. We are not willing to refund any of the
amount originally paid for the job. Please advise if Mrs. [redacted] would like the
interior repairs completed. We will complete the repairs with 14 days of
notification.
Respectfully
submitted,
Consumer
