Initial Business Response /* (1000, 6, 2015/07/13) */
Ms*** *** became a patient of our practice in early As with all patients we spend the first appointment discussing expectations of treatment, reviewing her x-rays and educating her on pros and cons of dentures and alternatives
Ms*** returned to discuss treatment again after her first visit and was given a treatment plan and treatment options were discussed in another consult
Prior to any treatment, consent forms were reviewed and signed stating potential risks of any type of dental treatmentMs*** was read these risks and informed of her treatment plan prior to any treatment being renderedInformed consent was given to the patient with multiple options and it was decided to remove several broken teeth as the patient wanted to go out of town
There were no complications during the procedure and no sign of visible infection in film or in the mouth
Antibiotics were not prescribed as prescribing antibiotics for non surgical extractions with no history of infection is not recommended nor the standard of care
It is possible Ms*** did indeed have a sinus infection, but this would be due to other factors outside of rendered treatmentThere are risk factors for treatment including smoking which were explained prior to treatment
As customary we always provide a hour post op visit to assess patientsMs*** was assessed at this appointment to be healing within limitsShe was also recommended to return but informed the office she would be out of town
Our office was never informed of any "emergency room" visit for antibioticsNor were we able to assess any "pus" from her gums "days later" as she was not in town and did not consult with usMs*** did not return to our office for over a month to discuss any concerns she may have hadThe patient was not in state and had no communication with our staff for over four weeksThere are no documented complaints or phone calls during this time frame
After over a month, Ms*** came to our office to discuss a new course of treatmentThere was no discussion of infection or a hospital visit at this timeShe was shown examples of sample final productsIt was discussed that the initial denture would serve as a temporaryShe was given the opportunity to select the shade and size of teeth available before anything was done
At the time Ms*** had a temporary prosthesis which she brought in and likedThe shape and size of teeth were recorded and measured exactly and replicated to the patients liking
Ms*** was very involved in the process of her treatment and despite her feelings of being a "product on a factory line" and "lied to" our front desk, assistant and doctor always go to great lengths to explain treatment to our patients whom we value very highly
As with any treatment, it is important to have patients expectations align with what is possibleThe package which consists of two dentures cost 1,dollarsThe first denture costing $and the second the remaining balance
Ms*** stated she did not like her denture after it was already made and did not speak to the doctor with her complaints in an appointmentDays later she filed a request for a refund after the lab had already custom made her denture for herMs*** was refunded $The cost of the first denture was not refunded as the prosthesis was already made
This matter was discussed over the phone with the patient and the patient was encouraged to speak with us at the office to address their concerns but elected not to
As with all patients we explain, once a custom medical prosthesis is made, it can not be used for anyone else and there are expenses incurred which is why patients are so involved in the decision process
We regret that Ms*** *** felt "lied to" however our office policy is to educate all patients prior to any treatment and sometimes patients misinterpret situations
We would be happy to welcome Ms*** back to our office!
