Review: On Feb. 2 and 3, 2015, Ace Handyman did work in our house, for which we paid $1825 on Feb. 3 at the angry and intimidating insistence of Ace's owner, who told us he had to pay his assistant at once and threatened to sue us if we did not pay in full immediately. Most of the work was unsatisfactory, some unfinished. First, the owner agreed to return to fix problems. Later, he cancelled his return appointment and sent us a check for $662.00, which covered less than half the cost of work to be redone. For items not covered by the check we asked the owner to return the lowest either of the amount he charged us or of two other contractors estimates. He did not respond to our proposal, but cancelled the $662.00 check. Another contractor later redid the work for $1,705.00.Ace also left paint spots on an antique oriental carpet and on a wooden bureau. The removal cost is $183.00.We ask that Ace reimburse us $1578.33 + $183.00 = $1761.33 ($183 for paint removal and $1578.33 for unsatisfactory work). The breakdown for the $1578.33 follows:1) $662.50 covered by Ace's now cancelled check ($375 for the attic ladder, $100 for the bathroom patch, and $187.50 for 1/2 of a garage cabinet door)2) $187.50 for the second 1/2 of the cabinet door. (Both halves were unfilled, unprimed, poorly sanded, poorly painted, and warped.)3) $675 for 4 removable bookshelves and 3 installed shelves, all unfilled, unprimed, poorly painted and poorly sanded. Ace claims the shelves were visually inspected when made (Feb. 3). The defects became very apparent only when the paint was fully cured. We informed Ace of the defects by e-mail on Feb. 6.4) $53.33 for an accordion door. (This is 1/3 of $160 that Ace charged for repair of three closet doors, including one accordion. The accordion door was left unaligned.)Ace's contractor's license (# 824718) is exempt from workers compensation insurance since Ace certified that it has no employees. As we saw, and as Ace's bills indicate, the owner had a full-time assistant on Feb. 2 and 3.Desired Settlement: We ask that Ace reimburse us $1578.33 + $183.00 = $1761.33 ($183 for paint removal and $1578.33 for unsatisfactory work). For breakdown, see complaint description.

Response:
[redacted]As Stated by the Business. Yes I did some work for these clients, and feel this claim is absurd. I at one time offered them a partial refund of the repairs for approximately $650. I even sent them a check which I have proof of delivery. However after 30 days the check was not cashed and I did not hear from the client. I then sent them another letter, certified return receipt, informing them I needed to assume one of two things, either the check had been lost, or they did not accept my resolution to their concerns and was therefore placing a stop payment on the check and considering the matter closed. I also informed them at that time I had just filed Bankruptcy, which I have. If you need support paperwork from me, I can work on that over the weekend and email it to you next week. Sincerely, *. *.Ace Handyman Service
