It’s rare for me to take the time and effort to write a negative review, but strongly feel that due to our recent experience with Academy Door & Control warrants such action and should warn other potential customers.
We’ve been having an intermittent issue with our garage door where it would start rolling down but then would reverse and go up again. We called Academy to have a technician come and check the issue several times with no luck. On the last visit, the Mechanic’s name was Joel. My wife was busy with work, so she let him in the garage and Joel mentioned he would check it out and let her know what he found. When finished he presented my wife with a bill for $253 and a recommendation to contact the manufacturer since the motor was fairly new.
I contacted the manager, Alan, and explained that the service provided and the mechanic’s behavior was very unsatisfactory. First, my wife was never consulted and hence never agreed to have the internal components replaced. We called to have the mechanic check the issue and never signed any paperwork to replace or fix the motor. Second, why would we ever agree to pay $253 for internal components when we could basically purchase a new motor for a few more dollars? Third, the mechanic replaced the components without consent and later recommended we reach out to the manufacturer. A more professional and ethical approach would have been to give us the option to first contact the manufacturer to see about replacing the motor.
Additionally, Joel instead of stepping up and admitting that he may have misunderstood, basically called my wife a liar by stating she agreed to replace the components, although there was no estimate presented prior to the work or/and written consent to do the work.
Alan initially agreed to look into the issue and reach out to the manufacturer for a resolution. What followed in the next weeks was our complying with every request and sending numerous videos of the issue. As of this date, the issue with the garage door is still occurring. I recently reached out to Alan for a status update, but have not received a reply.
An account of Academy’s disregard for customer service and business practices bordering on the unethical, I’ve decided to reach out to the Revdex.com and post our experience online. I highly recommend seeking other options if needing garage door repairs.
