My husband and I are 89 years old and we hired Platinum Concrete & Masonry to put in a new cement driveway and garage floor for $13,500. We told him we needed to have a safe walk from the home to the detached garage and front rural mail box from snow and ice. [redacted] would not give us a written contract claiming he has been doing this for 30 + years. We had to make out the checks to his girl friend. His crew would start the work at 5 PM and work into the dark under headlights. He claimed he did not need wire mesh because of the concrete mix he was using and did not need crushed gravel (traffic bond) under the drive. We asked about still being able to see the dirt/clay ground down the middle of the drive and he claimed he already put in 2 extra loads of gravel. He poured the garage floor and the section in front of the garage one day and was going to do the rest of the drive another day. Water on the section in front of the garage was draining into the garage. We complained that would form ice in the winter and he said he would tear that out and redo. He only did it because he had extra cement from the first load. The redo still drained into the garage and pooled puddles on the surface. The driveway cracked in several places only days after the install. The drive is about 4" higher then before. The apron to the drive now has an incline that makes it impossible to walk safely to the rural mail box. The house is on a flat lot, there was no reason to make the drive way that high from the street other that he did not want to dig down deeper to align with the front road. [redacted] asked to get paid the final amount early so he could pay his employees. He was not finished with the landscaping but we paid him. We then found out about the water pooling and draining issue. He was not returning, though we called him twice a day for five days and he would not answer or return our phone messages. We have logged the call attempts. We canceled payment on the last payment of $3,500 plus the $500 tip that we planned to give him. When he found out that the check was canceled he called back and wanted to make it right. It was beyond a month into this driveway and he had already redone part of the driveway twice to get the drainage of water correct and failed. Two other cement contractors have said the entire drive needs to be done to correct the mistakes at a cost of $10,500 more dollars. We are both going on 90 years of age. We are concerned about falling on the ice before it can be redone in the spring and we are out $6,500 dollars.
