Upon returning home from a business trip I leaned that our hot water tank had been replaced for $950. I called K&K Plumbing and made inquiries as to the cost of the unit, the amount of time that was required and their hourly rates.

My first interaction was with the office manager who used the tried and true "you are being rude sir" routine as a way to deflect answering my questions. She then transferred me to the owner who initially refused to give me his name.

When I inquired in a polite and business like fashion as to the information I was seeking, he refused to supply the information and in robot fashion kept repeating, "that is the price for the installation".

I told him that I knew it was a tough job because it had to be installed in an attic. Nevertheless given his refusal to provide business information I have no way of knowing if in fact this was a fair price.

Based on my conversation with Rheem Corporate Customer Service the cost to K&K appears to be around $250-300 which means based on the owners representation, that the mark up on the tank was between 50-80%. Using his representation of $500 it means the labor was $450 dollars.

Two workers for $450 equals $225 per man hour and assuming a 4 hour install portal to portal equals a rate of approximately $55 per hour.

Quite frankly although the mark up on the unit seems a bit generous to the installer, give the circumstances the pricing seems fair.

I would not recommend this provider in the future not because of pricing, but because they fail to respect the homeowner and provide the information required to make a fair assessment of their service.
