I had John Knabe come look at my mom's roof to replace some shingles that had blown off.
Upon inspection..I was told that the shingles weren't the only issue and that many shingles were loose and all pipe jacks needed to be replaced and skylights sealed. He was suppose to do the job on 9/2/19. He showed up on 8/29/19 without my knowledge or anyone being at home.
He called me the afternoon of the 29th and said all work was completed and sent me a short 30 second video of all repairs (all of which could not be seen, because he was videoing from a distance). Told me shingles were checked "row by row" and everything fixed.
He demanded to meet immediately to be paid the nearly $1000 in work. I told him I would need to go over and inspect the roof first to make sure everything was done. John got irrate and threatened to take the "legal route" if I didn't pay him. This was a HUGE RED FLAG to me.
I immediately went to inspect the roof...took pictures and video. The roofing repairs were HORRIBLE!! Shingles nailed down then tarred over. Many many loose shingles were still present all over the roof. One of the skylights was sealed horribly with tar and not properly done. The second skylight was not done at all. He made a horrible mess around all pipe jacks leaving many loose shingles and others nailed down and tarred over. Other shingles were cracked and broken and instead of replacing them he nailed the broken pieces back down and tarred over. Sealed a crack with tar instead of replacing it.
He was NOT paid today and I will probably have to spend more money tearing out his horrible work and replacing/sealing then originally planned.
Note: Let me clarify, he did NOT nail anything down at the top portion of the shingle. He nailed straight into the shingle itself (the gritty textured area) and then tarred over those nails. So, now you can see black tar spots all the roof. Horrible horrible contractor!!
John, the owner of the company, also a professional general contractor, is an amazing handy man!
I hired him to repair my house siding and paint it. Job was beautifully done! He is also good at the colors. I am so happy with the paint color that he picked for me.
I would highly recommend him.
