5th Gear Auto Reviews (%countItem)

Dec 6th car broke, It had overheated and blew radiator line. The next morning, Dec 7th, I had it towed home and called 5th gear. I told Max on the phone that the car overheated and there was also a oil leak I wanted investigate. it had been smelling oil from the heater, and seeing white smoke in the vents. Max aggreeed and I had their tow company take the vechicle from my home

On Dec 8th I was contacted for approval of a High pressure power steering line and radiator hose. when asked about the pressure line I was informed the system was empty and wouldn't hold fulid. I asked about the price and was quoted a pricec over 500.00 when cross referencing this with the dealership I couldn't find a price over 300. I also looked up the price of the radiator line, it wasn't more than 50.00 but I was charged over 130 according to the reciept.Max told me the price of the power steering line was incorrect, and would be fixed when I arrived. I reluctenlty appoved the work and was told the car would be ready the next day.

On Dec 9th I was told the car was ready and it was going to be over 1200. Before I could ask about any prices Max took the original invoice and replaced it with one that had the power steering pump over 200 dollars lower with no explanation. When I asked about the leaks they told me they had filled the car with UV fluid and I needed to drive it and bring it back in two weeks. never did they run a complete diagnostics on the vehicle though I was charged for one.The invoice does not provide a clear understanding of the labor that was perfromed (rate, or lenght of time)

On Dec 13th on the way to work in Boulder I began smelling oil agian and upon arriving to work smoke could be seen coming from the engine bay, and vents. I contacted Max, who apologized and had the car Towed back to thier shop.

Dec 14th pick up was told small leak was found, added UV and I need to drive it for up to two week. no work of any kind was preformed at this time. I was not contacted to approve any work, or told that anything was wrong. I have text messages and a voicemail stating this. and that the vehicle was ready again.

On Dec 15th I Broke down in Commerce City. I called an Uber and while on the way to work spoke to owner. he too apologized but was very defensive telling me "he doesn't have to deal with this" and telling me I was wrong in my assumption that there was an oil problem. after this argument he agreed to tow the car again and would fix it. at approximatley 930 pm I drove by his shop to confirm the car was there, and it wasn't so I drove back to Commerce City and found my vehicle still there, in direct contridiction to the agreement made by the owner.

I had the car towed back to my home and ran diagnostics. The errors codes that were returned indicated a failed electronic water pump (2E83), and thermostat (2EF5). it also shows an issue with the oil pressure, or it's sensor (2F7B). this should have been detected by the shop as they charged me a diagnostic fee.

5th Gear Auto Response

Hello ***, Sorry to hear about your displeasure with our service at 5th Gear. It sounds like there was a miscommunication in what we were hired to do and what your expectation of what you wanted us to do.

First, the scope of work you requested was to check and advise an oil leak and a coolant leak. We found a coolant hose was leaking, a bypass hose from the upper hose to the coolant bottle was leaking. You were not charged for this hose, only the labor to replace it.

The oil leak we noticed was the high pressure power steering hose was leaking. However with the size of the P/S Hose leak, and the potential other leaks, the under side and top of the engine was soaked in oil, dirt and grime. It is standard procedure for us to offer a engine clean, (you agreed) add a UV dye to the oil and have the customer drive the car for a week or two and then we recheck for other leaks if any. I will say, only the underside of the engine was cleaned off, the top of the engine should have been cleaned as well. This error was handled internally.

As far as the P/S line quote, it was quoted $500 in error, Max did let you know this, and what the price of he line was while you were still on the phone with him.

You are correct in the fact that we did not run a full diagnostics on the car, nor did you pay for one, nor was that in the scope of work you hired us to do.

You are also correct in the fact that the invoice was not gone over with you in detail, (parts in the left column, labor on the right) Max was unable to get a word in edgewise between your yelling and the use of F-bombs every other word.

Upon the second visit, when you were smelling/seeing smoke, screaming yelling and name calling and saying your car was out of oil, (The oil level was not out or even low) we had it towed back to the shop. We notice the top of the engine was not cleaned. I was very displeased to see this. I had the tech clean the top, bottom, and sides of the engine. No need to get approval as this should have been done the first time. This in addition to the tow was no charge to you.

Now on the 15th when you called, yelling and swearing with derogatory remarks, (the first 3-5 min of our call) I did say I didn’t need to deal with that kind of abuse. I stated the fact that the engine had been cleaned, you may see and smell some steam and or smoke. My apologies if that was not communicated to you or you did not hear that between F-bombs.

We both agreed that the car should once again come back, I had no idea were your cars location was, nor do I have keys. It was a misunderstanding as who was going to get the car from its location to mine. I think that we can both work on our communication skills, I look forward to hearing from you and getting your car taken care of. Eric
